Biographical
  • Born Nigel Leonard Robert Wolland on 20 June 1940 in Kettering, Northamptonshire, England. historyproject.org.uk

  • Grew up in Northamptonshire. After WWII, the family moved to Surrey. He completed his schooling in Weybridge, Surrey. historyproject.org.uk

  • His father was in the army; no family background in film or cinema. historyproject.org.uk


Career

  • He started work early in the cinema industry: after leaving school, he worked in a radio shop in Weybridge, but then applied and obtained a position as a probation projectionist at the ABC Regal, Walton-on-Thames. historyproject.org.uk

  • Over time, he progressed through projectionist ranks (fourth projectionist, third, etc.). He later worked at the Odeon. historyproject.org.uk

  • In 1983, he was appointed Chief Engineer at the Odeon Leicester Square in London. This role combined the old chief projectionist duties with those of “house engineer.” historyproject.org.uk+1


Recognition & Honours
